Students Are Unable to Connect Using a SynchronEyes Software Teacher ID

SMART Software SynchronEyes classroom management software 7.x, 6.x and 5.x
Operating Systems Windows operating systems

Issue

The teacher’s SynchronEyes software teacher ID isn’t listed in the Connect to Teacher dialog box. When a student types the teacher’s ID, they’re unable to connect.

Note

For information on connecting a student’s computer to the teacher’s computer using a teacher ID with SMART Sync software, see document 133330.

Solution

Diagnose and resolve the connection issue.

To open the SynchronEyes Student Configuration dialog box

  1. Browse to the SynchronEyes Student folder on the student's computer.

  2. Double-click StudentConfig.exe.

The SynchronEyes Student Configuration dialog box appears.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and resolve the student’s connection problems.

  4. If the student is still unable to connect, complete the following procedures:

After completing each of the procedures, try to connect the student to the teacher before attempting the next procedure.

  5. Check the teacher and student computers’ subnet.

  6. Check the modes of the network switch.

  7. Disable multicast filtering.

To check the teacher and student computers’ subnet

  1. Locate the teacher’s IP address:

  2. On the teacher’s computer, start SynchronEyes software.

  3. Select Help > About SynchronEyes.

The About SynchronEyes Software dialog box appears.

  4. Take note of the teacher’s IP address.

  5. Click OK to close the dialog box.

  6. Locate the student’s IP address:

  7. On the student’s computer, double-click the SynchronEyes icon in the notification area.

    A floating toolbar appears.

Floating Toolbar in Versions 5.x and 6.x

    Floating Toolbar in Version 7.x

  8. Click About in the floating toolbar.

The About SynchronEyes dialog box appears.

  9. Take note of the student’s IP address.

  10. Click OK to close the dialog box.

  11. Compare the teacher and student IP addresses to determine if they’re on the same subnet.

  12. If the two computers are located on different subnets, change the Multicast Time to Live (TTL) value:

    Note

By default, the Multicast TTL value for SynchronEyes software is 1, which restricts the scope to the same subnet. A value of 15 allows for different subnets but restricts the scope to the same site.

  13. On the teacher’s computer, start SynchronEyes software.

  14. Select Options > Preferences.

The Preference Settings dialog box appears.

  15. Click the Advanced tab.

  16. Type 15 in the Multicast TTL box.

  17. Click OK to save your changes, and then close the dialog box.

  18. Restart the teacher and student computers.

To check the modes of the network switch

If the teacher and student computers are located on the same subnet, but IP multicast filtering isn’t set up correctly on a layer 3 (IP‑aware) network switch, multicasting won’t always work.

If your network switch is manufactured by 3Com, enable both IGMP Multicast Filtering SnoopMode and IGMP Multicast Filtering QueryMode. If both of these modes are enabled and the student is still unable to connect, disable both of these modes and try again.

See your switch’s instructions for more information.

To disable multicast filtering

If IP multicasting isn't available on your network, set SynchronEyes software to use only TCP/IP communication.

Note

Configuring SynchronEyes software to use only TCP/IP communication has several disadvantages.

  • Students aren’t able to automatically detect their teachers. Students must type their teacher’s host name or IP address in order to manually connect to their teacher’s computer.

  • Teachers are unable to connect to student computers using class lists.

  • Teacher broadcasts are slower and require a greater network bandwidth than those using multicasting.

  1. On the teacher’s computer, start SynchronEyes software.

  2. Select Options > Preferences.

The Preference Settings dialog box appears.

  3. Click the Advanced tab.

  4. Clear the Enable for screen broadcast check box.

  5. Click OK to save your changes, and then close the dialog box.

  6. Restart the teacher and student computers.
