Issue
Students can bypass the Internet Block feature in SynchronEyes software in three ways:
-
By starting their Web browser in No Add-ons mode
-
By adding “-extoff” to the name of the Internet Explorer shortcut
-
By pressing the Windows Explorer Search button in Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer
Note
SMART Sync 2009 blocks Internet access for all browsers rather than using an Internet Explorer add-on. Therefore this issue doesn’t affect SMART Sync 2009.
Solution
Use the Application Block feature to prevent students from using Internet Explorer.
OR
Disable the Windows Explorer Search button to prevent students from bypassing the Internet Block feature.
To block Internet Explorer in SynchronEyes 6.x

Click Applications in the Views toolbar.
OR
Select View > Applications.
The Applications view appears.

Click New Rule.
OR
Select Edit > New Rule.
The New Application Blocking Rule dialog box appears.

Type a name for your rule in the Enter Block Rule Name box.

Select the Block the following applications option.
-
Select Internet Explorer in the List of Applications, and then click Add.

Click OK.
The new application blocking rule appears in the Applications view.

Select the new application blocking rule.

Click Activate Rules.
OR
Select Edit > Activate Rules.
To block Internet Explorer in SynchronEyes 7.x
-
Click Applications in the Views toolbar.
OR
Select View > Applications.
The Applications view appears.

Click Add New.
OR
Select Edit > New Rule.
The New Application Blocking Rule dialog box appears.

Type a name for your rule in the Enter Block Rule Name box.

Select the Block the following applications option.
-
Select Internet Explorer in the List of Applications, and then click Add.

Click OK.
The new application blocking rule appears in the Applications view.

Select the new application blocking rule.
-
Click Activate.
OR
Select Edit > Activate.
To disable the Windows Explorer Search button
-
Click Start > Run.
The Run dialog box appears.
-
Type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
The Group Policy window appears.
-
Browse to Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.
-
Right-click Remove Search menu from Start Menu, and then select Properties.
The Remove Search Menu From Start Menu Properties dialog box appears.

Click Enabled.
-
Click Apply, and then click OK.
-
Close the Group Policy window.
